Ritz & Hoback: Liberals admit U.S. duties on Canadian softwood lumber will lead to job losses

Posted On 2017-04-25 00:00:00

OTTAWA – Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Commerce imposed preliminary countervailing duties as high as 24 per cent on Canadian softwood lumber imports. In response, the Hon. Gerry Ritz, Official Opposition Critic for International trade, and Randy Hoback, Official Opposition Critic for Canada-US Relations, issued the following statement:

“The Liberal government has failed forestry workers, their families and whole communities by not securing a new softwood lumber agreement. With the imposition of duties that average about 20 per cent, the Liberals now admit that their failure will inevitably lead to job losses in Canada.”

“Negotiating a new softwood lumber agreement has never been a priority for Justin Trudeau and his government. Those who work in Canada’s forests and mills deserve stability and predictability from their government. Thousands of rural Canadians will now lose their jobs because of Liberal inaction and their lack of leadership over the last year and half.”

“This time last year, the Liberals heralded a breakthrough on the softwood lumber file with the previous administration. Yet today we face yet another softwood lumber crisis. Provinces have lost their trust in this Liberal government and have started to appoint their own envoys to the U.S.”

“Companies like NorSask Forest Products, one of the largest First Nations-owned sawmills in Canada, barely survived the last dispute, and will be hit hard by retroactive and ongoing countervailing duties as well as future antidumping duties expected as early as June.”

“For a government that likes to pretend to stand up for middle class Canadians, the Liberals clearly have no plan to protect thousands of well-paying forestry jobs that will be lost under their watch.”
