Liberals will be pulling the trigger this spring on gun control legislation which will again target rural Canadians and legitimate gun owners.
While Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale tries to suggest he will not be reinstating the national gun registry, Liberal Members are already expressing concerns over the negative ramifications that their government’s legislation will have on gun owners.
“The details are in the Liberal Party platform and they again target rural Canadians and gun owners. They cannot achieve the changes they have publically proposed without a mechanism of registration. A gun registry by any other name is still a gun registry.” said Gerry Ritz, Member of Parliament for Battlefords-Lloydminster.
The Liberal Party’s platform includes a promise to require firearms vendors to keep records of all firearms inventory and for vendors to keep records of all firearms sales and the buyer’s information. To add insult to injury, the Canadian firearms advisory committee to Minister Goodale does not have any firearm friendly members, a blatant move by the Liberals to stack the deck against responsible gun owners.
The last gun registry was imposed by Jean Chretien’s Liberal government and was recognized as a political and practical disaster. The 2006 Conservative government repealed many controversial aspects of the registry and in 2015 the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act received royal assent, cleaning up much of the Liberal’s first gun control mess. We as a government also rejected the U.N. marketing push as unwarranted, however the Liberals are now moving forward on this as well.
Conservatives will continue to defend the rights of responsible gun owners and law abiding citizens. The massive failure of the previous long-gun registry is a testament to the ineffective and wasteful Liberal policy that did not work. We will hold the Liberal Government to account for their trigger happy decisions that continue to harm Canadians, and will oppose any attempt to bring back any Liberal long-gun registry by stealth.
